Mentee

 

Initiate and maintain contact

Take the lead in setting up meetings and proactively reaching out to the mentor.

Keep lines of communication open between scheduled meetings, updating the mentor on any progress or challenges.               

Come prepared to meetings and respect the mentor’s time   

Prepare specific topics or questions in advance to make the best use of each meeting. Show respect for the mentor's time by arriving punctually and being mindful of time limits.               

Set goals and track progress

Define clear goals for the mentoring relationship early on and review progress regularly. Take responsibility for following up on agreed actions and tracking your development.

Be open to feedback

Approach feedback with an open mind, and be ready to reflect and act on constructive input to support your growth.

Demonstrate Initiative and Accountability

Take responsibility for your learning journey and the decisions and actions that follow from the mentoring process. Be proactive about identifying areas for growth.

Seek Guidance on Broader Career Development

Use the opportunity to gain insights into broader career skills, including networking, industry trends, and personal brand-building.

Act as a sounding board, role model and advisor

Listen actively and offer advice that supports the mentee’s goals. Share relevant experiences and act as a positive role model in professional behavior and decision-making.

Provide Constructive Feedback and Encourage Reflection

Offer honest, actionable feedback while encouraging the mentee to reflect on their own progress and decision-making.

Support Problem-Solving and Skill Development:

Help the mentee analyze challenges and explore solutions, fostering the development of problem-solving skills.

Facilitate Access to Professional Networks

Introduce the mentee to relevant contacts and networking opportunities that could support their career growth.

Respond in a Timely Fashion

Address requests for support promptly to show commitment to the mentee’s development.

Encourage Ownership and Accountability

Reinforce the importance of the mentee’s responsibility for their growth, supporting them in setting and pursuing their own goals.

Adapt to Mentee’s Development Needs

Tailor the mentoring approach based on the mentee’s progress, adjusting as they gain confidence and skills.
